Why Google Doesn't Want the iPhone to Die

Us journalists and bloggers like to make a lot of the battle between Google's Android and Apple's iOS, but it the search engine has a vested interest in seeing the platform succeed. Why? iPhones and iPads are simply sending the site a ton of traffic.

Says Asia-Pacific president Daniel Alegre to Adnews:

"Whenever iPhone succeeds, Google succeeds. I actually don't look at it as iPhone versus Android. iPhone is a very strong driver of query growth for Google. We also monetise apps through the iPhone..we actually benefit from iPhone's growth."

Makes sense. In total the iOS ecosystem is getting increasingly larger, and if you group the iPad and iPhone together, is more than holding its own against the Android platform. Simply put, pissing off Apple is not in Google's best interest no matter how much they'd like to see their mobile OS be #1.

Google has said previously that the iPhone has been a key driver of growth in its mobile search efforts. So it shouldn't be surprising that at least publicly executives like Alegre are making such statements. Then again, if all those iPhone users pick up a Droid -- the only other really dominant mobile platform -- is Google really losing anyway?

IPhone 4 Becoming Most Popular ‘Camera’ on Flickr

Flickr iPhone statisticsFlickr Flickr graphs the site’s most popular cameras.

It looks like the point-and-shoot camera is quickly heading to the gadget graveyard. May it rest in peace next to your old VCR, Sony Walkman and Atari game console.

According to graph that show the top cameras used on Flickr, the social photo Web site, the iPhone 4 is quickly becoming the No. 1 camera among its users. The graphs include the camera of any Flickr member who has uploaded at least one photo or video over the last year.

Flickr last year said that its users were uploading 130 million photos to the site each month. Flickr doesn’t offer precise information about the number of photos or percentage share for each camera.

The graphs show that digital S.L.R. cameras are still used regularly by the Flickr community. But in terms of overall share, the iPhone 4 is only slightly behind the current most popular camera, the Nikon D90, a $900 digital S.L.R.

There have been reports that the next iPhone will include a Sony 8-megapixel camera, which could signal trouble for the digital S.L.R.’s too. For now, it’s the point-and-shoot cameras that are being battered by the smartphone.

Top iPhone 4 Bugs

Problems range from inconvenient to completely unfixable. The iPhone 4 comes with one free year of AppleCare, which means that one visit to the Genius Bar can help. With so many iPhones hot off the factory floor, its not guaranteed that even replacement hardware won't have issues of its own. Here's a list of the top 10 iPhone 4 bugs, issues and complaints to watch out for when you receive your shipment from Apple.

apple iphone 4 glitches

1. The antenna "death grip" is affecting reception quality. Apple has already acknowledged the issue, and advises users to avoid holding the lower left side of the iPhone 4 or purchase a case. Connecting the metal on both sides of the black line with your fingers could result in poor reception.

2. Yellow spots on the screen. The Apple Retina Display is brand new technology. Some have reported blurry yellow spots on the display. This could be a chemical used to bond the glass that hasn't fully dried before shipping. iPhone 4 owners have reported that in some cases the yellow spots disappear after a few days of normal use.

3. A green blob of discoloration in photos taken with the camera. Users have posted examples of photos taken with the iPhone 4 with a strange aura or circle of green color in the center. It's unclear what's causing the problem, however the issue should be covered by your warranty.

4. Excessive heat during operation. The rear glass panel of the iPhone 4 radiates heat away from the device. Some customers have speculated that due to reception issues the radio is working overtime and generating more heat than it should.

5. Battery life is below expectations. Reports of this problem are likely related to issue #1 and #4, since an overtaxed radio will use more juice. Software issues could also cause the battery to run down quickly if power management is not running optimally. The iPhone 4 has a larger battery than the 3GS, so users may also have unrealistic expectations.

6. Proximity sensor acting up. This little piece of hardware turns off the screen when the iPhone 4 is next to your ear, preventing the touch screen from registering input. Some users are complaining that the sensor doesn't always turn off the screen, resulting in accidental dialing, hang-ups and other surprises as the ear presses on-screen buttons. Some have explained that the proximity sensor works sometimes but not always.

7. Poor 3G data speeds. Although this could be a local issue with the AT&T network, some users have compared their 3G data speeds to a previous model iPhone and claim the iPhone 4 is slower. Others are impressed by the improvement in download speeds. Whether or not your iPhone 4 has this problem depends on many factors and could also be related to issue #1. Some iPhone 4 owners claim speeds are faster when they leave their device on the EDGE network.

8. Switched volume buttons. Not as widespread, this issue has been reported and involves the "+" and "-" buttons on the left side of the iPhone 4 being switched. Normally the "+" or increase volume button should be on the top, with the "-" button on the bottom. Sounds like someone at the factory wasn't paying attention!

9. The glass back is too fragile. There are unfortunate individuals who have already shattered the back of their iPhone 4. These events have even happened while the device was cloaked in an Apple iPhone 4 Bumper case. Apple claims the glass used in its latest smartphone is super strong. This may be true, but when glass is strengthened it also becomes more prone to shattering due to tension inside the glass sheet.

10. Where is the white iPhone 4? No word on when the white version will be available. It's currently not available for pre-order or in stores. Apple watchers assumed that based on the launch announcement both colors would be available at the same time. Apple has made no comment on the matter.

Iphone 4 - Introduction And Design

For all the buzz that surrounded the iPhone 4, Apple's chief executive Steve Jobs offered few surprises when he unveiled the device after details had leaked out last March.Apple iPhone 4 Front

On the plus side, it boasts a thinner design, a "retina display" that's so sharp that the human eye can't distinguish its individual pixels, and two cameras -- a VGA one on the front for video chatting, called "FaceTime," and a 5.0-megapixel one on the back for photos.

Also, Apple has updated its iPhone 4.0 operating system, dubbed iOS4, with hundreds of minor upgrades, but most notably the ability to now multitask. Something Google phones have been able to do for quite some time.

But there are minuses, First, FaceTime, unfortunately, is limited to only Wi-Fi connections and to other iPhone 4s. It also falls behind the Evo, which has better 8.0-megapixel camera and fourth-generation, or 4G, connectivity. Also, the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone, AT&T, decided to discontinued its unlimited data plan, so new customers will have to pay by the gigabyte.

But when Jobs wrapped up his presentation, the biggest disappointment to many customers was that the event had come and gone with no mention of Verizon. Analysts has speculated that Apple may lose its grip on the iPhone by the end of the year, with new products slated for rivals such as T-Mobile and Verizon coming as early as the beginning of 2011.

When the original iPhone was unveiled in 2007, Apple reinvented the smartphone, combining three products -- a phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls and the Internet communication of a desktop device -- making competitors scramble to recover. But as many rivals catch up, the iPhone's dominance has began to wane.

Still, the iPhone 4 is impressive. It's worth a look for consumers who need a fast smartphone with robust features and cutting-edge design. The HTC's Evo 4G and Droid Incredible may offer more in terms of hardware and power but they still pale in comparison to Apple's distinctive styling and robust software.

Design

The iPhone 4 is sandwiched between two glass panels -- the same material the company says is used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stronger and 30 times harder than plastic, the composite is scratch-resistant, durable and a fingerprint-magnet. When it's kept clean, though, the glossy and sleek exterior gives a refined feel that Apple has come to be known for.

We dropped the iPhone 4 several times from a few feet onto a hard surface. There were no problems. And it survived without a single scratch.

Jobs likes thin. And taking a page from the MacBook Air, the new iPhone 4 is the world's thinnest smartphone, measuring a remarkable 9.3 millimeters thin -- that's over 25 percent thinner than its predecessor, the iPhone 3GS, and HTC's Droid Incredible and Evo 4G devices. Although they all weigh about the same, except the brick-like Evo, which is nearly 30 percent heavier, the iPhone 4 feels denser and sturdier -- more like a a quality product than a disposable device.

At first glance, the stainless steel band around the rim seems uncharacteristically Apple, but it's actually there for a reason. It not only offers a ridged structure to withstand the everyday bumps and drops, but also functions as a "multi-band" antenna for stronger Wi-Fi connections and improved cellular reception. The dramatic change represents a radical shift from its predecessors, which hid the antenna under the shell, but also puts out nearly 50 percent more radio-frequency radiation than the 3GS.

The iPhone 4, like the 3GS, has a large 3.5-inch touch screen display, much smaller than the Evo's 4.3-inch behemoth. But the iPhone 4 blows everyone away with outstanding picture quality. Its 640 by 960 resolution "retina display" is over four times sharper than the 3GS.

It has dual cameras -- a high-resolution 5.0-megapixel one with LED flash on the back for photos, and a second 0.3-megapixel front-facing one for "FaceTime" video-chatting. A backside illumination sensor helps capture beautiful photos in low-light environments.

Apple iPhone 4 SideAround the rim, dual speaker microphones -- one on the top and another on the bottom -- suppress unwanted background noise for improved phone calling. There's also a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. The side buttons are nice and tactile. And the center button feels snappier. Everything, on the whole, seems better put together.

The original iPhone had an aluminum back plate and felt like a quality product. The 3G and 3GS, subsequently, used plastic, which gave them a cheaper feel. Now the iPhone 4's shiny and beautiful materials brings back a standard that matches its hefty price.

It's shockingly thin and feels great in the hand. You really don't quite notice it until you hold it. It's another sexy design we've all come to expect from Apple and, hands down, the best looking phone of the bunch. But just be aware that you'll be constantly wiping it.

Out of the box, the Apple iPhone 4 comes with a standard battery, a USB power adapter, a dock connector to USB cable, earphones with remote and microphone, and customary documentation.
